The Inter-American Defense Board, represented by the President of the Council of Delegates, Vice Admiral Alexandre Rabello de Faria and by the Director of the Inter-American Defense College, Major General James E. Taylor, participated as an observer in the South American Defense Conference (SOUTHDEC) held in Quito, Ecuador, from September 14 to 15, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SOUTHDEC is an executive-level forum between the Chiefs of Defense Staff (Chiefs of Defense) of South America, co-sponsored by the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) and the co-host country, for the purpose of discussing security and defense issues of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this year's edition, based in Ecuador, the topic discussed was "Defeating Global and Cross-Border Threats through Regional Collaboration." The conference provided a forum for executive-level discussions on \u201cGray Zone Warfare: Combat in Cyberspace, Space and Information\u201d; and "Environmental Security and the Role of the Defense Forces."<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This conference was attended by the defense chiefs or representatives of the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Uruguay. Also in attendance were the Southern Command and the National Guard Bureau (NGB), representatives of the United States of America and observers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
