On October 3, the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB), represented by members of its Disaster Cooperation Division (DCD), met with Mr. Jorge Terrones, Military Humanitarian Coordination Officer of the World Food Program (WFP). of the United Nations for Latin America, with the objective of verifying the possibilities of cooperation between these organizations on issues related to Humanitarian Assistance in Disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the meeting, the Head of the DCD, Colonel Orlando Ugaz of the Peruvian Army, presented the Disaster Cooperation Mechanism \u2013 MECODE, conceived by the Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas (CMDA) and the IADB secretariat, with the support of the Organization of American States (OAS). MECODE is based on the exchange of updated, reliable and timely information between the 34 member countries of the IADB and the regional and subregional civil-military cooperation systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Jorge Terrones, head of the WFP Regional Office in Panama, presented some experiences of the United Nations World Food Program in humanitarian-military interaction, through which it has been coordinated that humanitarian agents and members of the Armed Forces share the same operational space, which has facilitated the efficiency and effectiveness of the Program's operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the first result of the meeting, the IADB proposed the participation of United Nations representatives in the Simulated Humanitarian Assistance Exercise MECODEX 2024, to be held in Peru, which will represent an important contribution to its development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MECODEX 2024 has the support of the Ministry of Defense of Peru and is being planned by the IADB, in coordination with the CMDA and the OAS. It is an annual crisis simulation exercise designed, planned and executed by the IADB, with the objective of validating the processes and sub-processes developed for MECODE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
