{"id":43560,"date":"2024-02-06T14:48:49","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T19:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jid.org\/jid\/?p=40653"},"modified":"2024-03-20T10:38:33","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T14:38:33","slug":"monitores-interamericanos-de-desminado-humanitario-se-despiden-y-reciben-condecoraciones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jid.org\/en\/monitores-interamericanos-de-desminado-humanitario-se-despiden-y-reciben-condecoraciones\/","title":{"rendered":"Inter-American Humanitarian Demining Monitors Say Goodbye and Receive Decorations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On January 23, Major U\u00e9merson Ferreira da Silva and Major Bruno Braga da Silva Sousa, both from the Brazilian Army and members of the Group of Inter-American Humanitarian Demining Monitors in Colombia (GMI-CO), a mission of the Inter-American Defense Board (JID) in support of the Comprehensive Action Program against Antipersonnel Mines of the Organization of American States (AICMA-OAS), received, in Bogot\u00e1, decorations from the OAS and the IADB, on the occasion of their farewell to the Group, in recognition for the specialized services provided for two years in support of this humanitarian work in Colombian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs. Tammy Hall, General Coordinator of AICMA-OAS, and Captain (Brazilian Marine) Leonel Mariano da Silva J\u00fanior, Head of the GMI-CO, awarded the Medals. For Major U\u00e9merson, \u201creceiving these decorations represents recognition of the role we have played in supporting the Colombian population, in addition to serving as an incentive to continue contributing to a world free of the threat of antipersonnel mines.\u201d The officers also received, from Colonel Vicente Ger\u00f3nimo Gamboa Escobar, of the Mexican Army and member of the GMI-CO, badges of Demining Experts, for their relevant contributions to said activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the ceremony also had events on behalf of the replacement of Monitors. Lieutenant Captain (Marine) Leandro Gomes Ferreira and Army Captain Lu\u00e3 Mascarenhas de Carvalho, both from Brazil, received certificates of their training for humanitarian work and are now ready to begin their activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2006, the GMI-CO has supported the efforts of the OAS and Colombian authorities to reduce the effects of improvised explosive devices and antipersonnel mines, which have penalized the population of this country for six decades.
