Within the framework of the celebration of International Women's Day, the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) and the Hemispheric Security Commission of the Organization of American States (CSH\/OAS) held an important meeting on March 7 on the undeniable importance of the work carried out by women in the Armed Forces and in hemispheric security. More than a celebration, the meeting represents a renewed commitment by institutions to integrate and value the role of women in transformative actions, both in society and in military institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this way, the IADB and the CSH are aligned with the relevant commitments of the OAS and the UN in favor of the integration of women in all areas of human activity and decision-making levels. This initiative is based on the conviction that security and defense, both conceptually and as strategic functions of States, will continue to evolve alongside the political and strategic thinking of each country and will be reinforced by the influence of women. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his speech at the event, Brigadier General Marco Antonio \u00c1lvarez Reyes, President of the Council of Delegates of the IADB, highlighted the value of the role of women as an essential component in the defense and security processes of the hemisphere, contributing unique and vital contributions to conflict prevention and resolution and peacebuilding. \u201cToday we meet with the firm purpose of honoring the work of all women who also contribute to security and defense, as well as to reaffirm our commitment to gender equality. May this day be a reminder that women and men can build an equal and inclusive future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the international panelists who shared their knowledge, lessons and experiences on this important topic at the event, the IADB was represented by two military personnel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Colonel Ivana Mara Ferreira Costa (Brazilian Army), who offered valuable insight into how female leadership can contribute to more empathetic and effective approaches to conflict resolution and peace promotion. In her opinion, "the female presence in peace missions has been associated with a greater ability to gain the trust of local communities, especially women and children, and to promote inclusion and dialogue."<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Sergeant Major Consuelo D\u00edaz \u00c1lvarez (Colombian Army), who shared her experiences on \u201cWomen in the development of defense institutions\u201d, focusing on the fundamental role that women can play in the evolution and strengthening of these institutions. In her opinion, "women's participation in defense institutions not only contributes to gender equality, but also promotes organizational effectiveness by introducing different perspectives and skills."<\/p>\n\n\n\n
