The event, which registered 2,000 participants and reached 3,000 views on digital platforms, brought together world-renowned experts to discuss the challenges and progress in humanitarian demining, a crucial issue for global security and well-being.

At the opening of the event, moderator Tammy Hall, from AICMA/OAS, highlighted the importance of international cooperation and the adoption of rigorous standards for demining. Steven Griner, representing the OAS, reinforced the organization's commitment to the cause, while General Marco Antonio Álvarez Reyes, president of the IADB Council of Delegates, emphasized civil-military collaboration as a key element for the effectiveness of the demining operations. The speeches highlighted the need for a joint and coordinated effort to address the global challenges of humanitarian demining.

The first technical session was led by Sasha Logie from the Geneva International Center for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), who explained the structure and procedures of the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS). Logie highlighted the need for a holistic and participatory approach to developing and updating IMAS, ensuring that they reflect global best practice and are adaptable to different national contexts. He mentioned the importance of active participation of stakeholders, including governments, NGOs and other international entities, to ensure the effectiveness of the standards.

Jonathon Richard Guthrie from Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) covered essential skills for demining, including improvised explosive device (IED) and explosive remnant ordnance (EOD) disposal. He highlighted the importance of standardizing the qualifications and competencies of operators to ensure the effectiveness and safety of operations. Guthrie also highlighted technological and methodological advances in the area of demining, such as the use of drones and artificial intelligence to detect and remove mines with greater precision and safety.

Lionel Pechera, also from GICHD, presented the updated IMAS guidelines for marking contaminated areas. He highlighted the need for an efficient signaling system that not only prevents inadvertent access to dangerous areas, but is also sustainable and adaptable to the different environments and resources available. Pechera emphasized the importance of considering factors such as the cost and durability of marking materials, as well as the need to adapt marking techniques to local conditions, such as desert or forest terrain.

Tammy Hall took the floor again to discuss Technical Note 07.11.03, which deals with the concept of “all reasonable efforts” in demining. Hall explained that this concept is essential to balance the need to ensure the safety and effectiveness of operations with the responsibility to use resources efficiently and sustainably. He stressed that "every reasonable effort" must be contextualized according to the reality of each country, taking into account factors such as the budget, the extent of contamination and the available technical capacity.

Kaitlin Hodge, Humanity and Inclusion (HI), concluded the technical presentations by discussing assistance to mine victims. He emphasized the importance of comprehensive support that includes medical care, psychological support and socioeconomic inclusion. Hodge also highlighted the need for policies and practices that do not discriminate against victims and ensure that all survivors receive the support they need to rebuild their lives. He stressed that assistance to victims is a constant responsibility, which must be maintained even after the removal of the mines, to guarantee the complete reintegration of survivors into society.

The seminar ended with words from Major-Brigadeiro do Ar Flávio Luiz de Oliveira Pinto, secretary general of the IADB, who highlighted the importance of the topic, while highlighting the dedication of the participants and organizers of the event.

In a special tribute, Tammy Hall was recognized for her tireless work and commitment to the cause of humanitarian demining, receiving thanks from colleagues and collaborators. The tribute included testimonies from several people who worked closely with Hall, highlighting his leadership, technical knowledge and commitment to the humanitarian demining mission.

The 2024 Humanitarian Demining Seminar reaffirmed the importance of international collaboration and the use of rigorous standards to address demining challenges. With detailed presentations and rich discussions, the event provided a valuable platform to exchange knowledge and promote best practices in the sector. Continuing these efforts is essential to ensure a safer, mine-free world where all communities can live in peace and security.

The organizers of the event also highlighted the importance of future meetings and seminars to continue strengthening the collaboration network between different countries and organizations.
