Washington, DC \u2013 On February 27, 2025, the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) presented its cyber defense initiatives during the meeting of the Committee on Hemispheric Security of the Organization of American States (OAS), held at the headquarters of the institution in the U.S. capital. This initiative was presented by Lieutenant General Flavio Luiz de Oliveira Pinto, Director General of the IADB Secretariat and Lieutenant Colonel Cristiano Rolim, Chief of the IADB Cyber Defense Section. The organization highlighted the The fundamental role of cybersecurity in protecting OAS member countries from increasingly sophisticated digital threats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Importance of Cyber Defense in the Current Scenario<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Member countries have different levels of maturity in their cyber defence, however there are common challenges that include increasing digitalisation, the protection of critical infrastructures and the training and retention of professionals in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IADB's Cyber Defense Section is working on updating a network of contacts, exchanging strategic information, promoting educational activities and organizing technical events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The central innovation introduced by the IADB was its model of cyber defense exercises, which prioritizes cooperation among countries rather than competition, thereby strengthening collective capacity to respond to cyber incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future Perspectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IADB plans to expand its cyber crisis management exercises to a greater number of countries, in addition to deepening hemispheric cooperation in this area. Among the new areas of interest for the coming years are Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing, emerging technologies that present challenges and opportunities for digital security. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentation underscored the need for unity among the countries of the Americas in cyber defense, ensuring greater security and resilience in the face of growing digital threats.
