“NEW CHALLENGES FOR INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE CONTEXT OF CURRENT CONFLICTS”
Objective: aFinalize and discuss relevant topics in the context of contemporary conflicts, highlighting some of the main challenges facing International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Human Rights (HR), as well as their impact on the preparation and performance of forces in conflict.
The Secretariat of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) and the Inter-American Defense College (IADC) are pleased to invite you to the "Seminar on International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights / 2025." This important international event, already a tradition and with massive public participation (more than 14,000 registered participants from 56 countries in the 2024 edition), will bring together experts in the field, offering an opportunity and fostering the exchange of information, experiences, lessons learned, and good practices among IDB Member and Observer States on some of the main challenges for the application of the Law of Armed Conflict in contemporary conflicts.
The seminar will be structured into three thematic panels, as follows:
– Panel 1: Challenges for IHL and Human Rights in the Face of New Technologies Used in Armed Conflicts (Drones, AI, Cyberattacks, etc.);
– Panel 2: Non-International Armed Conflicts (NIAC) and Other Situations of Violence/Public Security: a view on the current international situation;
– Panel 3: IHL and the protection of civilians in conflict zones (women and children).
Directed to the general public already master's students at the CID, this international seminar will be carried out in format hybrid (virtual and in-person) and will be broadcast on the CID's YouTube channels, with simultaneous translation into English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
