The CID is an international educational institute that depends on and receives financing from the OAS and the Inter-American Defense Board. It takes advantage of the academic and research centers of the city of Washington to teach its courses in addition to making external academic trips to American countries. The CID is a unique institution in the Western Hemisphere in the sense that both the teachers and the students are of an international composition. The broad international participation offers an extraordinary opportunity to exchange ideas in addition to creating a solid foundation to foster a better understanding of the inter-American system. The close collaboration between teachers and students fosters close professional and personal cooperation as it is enriched by the presence of students from diverse backgrounds.

Each OAS member country can present candidates to be students at the CID. Since its inception, more than 2,669 students from 26 countries have graduated from the College. More than 40 percent of graduates have been promoted to the rank of general, admiral or the civilian equivalent to occupy leadership positions in their respective countries. As can be seen from those who have graduated, the College prepares very talented people to later occupy important management positions on the American continent.
