About us?
The Inter-American Defense Board (IDB) is an entity of the Organization of American States (OAS) dedicated to promoting cooperation in defense and hemispheric security. Was founded in 1942 during the Third Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the American Republics.
Currently, it is made up of 28 member countries.
Our mission is to provide technical and educational assistance to OAS Member States on issues related to national defense, arms control, confidence-building and security, humanitarian action, and other issues of common interest to the region.
What do we do?
We offer specialized advice to countries in various areas such as military doctrine, civil defense, threat reduction and disaster management.
We also train defense officers and officials through the Inter-American Defense College, our Washington DC-based graduate educational institution
We promote the exchange of experiences between the armed forces of the region through meetings, seminars and publications.
How do we organize ourselves?
Our main organs are the Council of Delegates, highest authority of the IADB and representative body of the member countries, the Secretariat, in charge of daily management, and the Inter-American Defense College. See structure.
Mission
Provide the Organization of American States (OAS) and its member states with technical, consultative and educational advisory services on issues related to military and defense matters in the Hemisphere to contribute to compliance with the OAS Charter.
Vision
The vision of the Board consists of consolidating itself as an international organization of technical, educational, consultative and coordination excellence in military, defense and related matters, projecting itself as a modern, efficient and proactive entity, which contributes decisively to the fulfillment of the vision of the Organization of American States (OAS) and become the facilitating entity between this Organization, the Member States and the International Organization of a similar nature
