On October 17, the Inter-American Defense Board received a visit from the Deputy Chief of Education and Culture of the Ministry of Defense of Brazil (CHEC/MD), Admiral Alexandre Veras Vasconcelos.
At the traditional facilities of the Casa del Soldado in Washington, DC, Admiral Veras and his entourage were received by representatives of the Brazilian Navy at the IADB, where, after a quick tour of the facilities, they watched a welcome video – sent by Brigadier Flávio Luiz de Oliveira Pinto, Secretary General of the IADB, who was in Argentina to participate as a guest of the XVI Conference of Ministers of Defense of the Americas (CMDA) – and a presentation on the historical evolution of the Board and its main lines of action today, working to strengthen hemispheric trust and security in areas such as Cybersecurity and Cyberdefense, Cooperation in Cases of Disaster, Environmental Protection, Humanitarian Demining, Maritime Security, Arms Management, Human Rights and the Women’s Agenda, Peace and Security, among other topics.

For its part, the CHEC delegation presented an overview of its main functions and activities in areas such as Military Education in the Armed Forces, the Study of National Defense, the Study and Promotion of Research and the Preservation of Military Historical and Cultural Heritage.
Finally, representatives of both institutions discussed the possibility of developing future joint actions for mutual benefit, such as the presentation by CHEC of high-level representatives of the Brazilian academic community to participate in the various conferences and seminars held by the IADB throughout the year, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge on security and defense on the continent.

The Inter-American Defense Board
Created in 1942 during the Third Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the American Republics, the IADB is an organization that promotes cooperation in matters of security and defense among the countries of the Americas, facilitating dialogue and collaboration on military and civilian issues. Its mission is to provide Member States with technical advisory services through the General Secretariat, consultative services through the Council of Delegates, and educational services through the Inter-American Defense College, on issues related to military and defense affairs in the Hemisphere to contribute to compliance with the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS).
