The Organization of American States (OAS) entrusted this Board with the task of holding a Cyber Defense conference, with the purpose of proposing recommendations to the Member States of the OAS on security in the management of information through cyberspace and the protection of computer media.
That is why, on November 28, 2018, the first conference on Cybersecurity in the Hemisphere was held titled “Cyberdefense in the Americas: Importance of Cyberspace as a Battlefield of the 21st Century”, whose purpose was to present a general overview of the importance in the application of various security measures in the management of information in the face of the risks of suffering a cyber attack.
The IADB made known to member countries and other international organizations the work that cybersecurity experts have carried out during their professional lives, providing data, measures and lessons learned to guarantee the security of States and Society in general.
The event was attended by various heads of the Delegations of the Member Countries of the OAS and the IADB, representatives of International Organizations, such as the Inter-American Defense College, among others, companies of high international prestige specialized in communications, as well as specialists involved. in the subject; Likewise, this event was broadcast live throughout the American Continent, as well as in other countries around the world.
There were highly prestigious moderators, Mr. Brian S. Quigley and Lieutenant Colonel of the Mexican Army Juan Manuel Solis Hernández, members of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE) of the OAS; Likewise, high-level speakers included Dr. Kimberly McClain of the United States Cyber Command; Mr Felix Uribe, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Cybersecurity Policy and Management Program at the University of Maryland University College; Captain Enrique Arnáez Braschi, Cyber Defense Commander – Peruvian Navy; Canadian Army Lieutenant Colonel Brennan Cornell, Cyber Defense specialist; Mr. Justin Lynch, Associate Editor of Fifth Domain and Brazilian Army Colonel João Marinonio Enke Carneiro, PhD.
As a result of the conference, it can be highlighted that some Countries of the Hemisphere have made progress on this issue (only 10 Countries of the Continent have a Cyber Strategy), being evident that to apply this type of measures, collaboration is essential, both internally in each country, at the level of the Armed Forces, Government and private initiative; However, we must go beyond our borders, carry out Inter-State actions with the support of the Inter-American Defense Board and the Organization of American States in the field of cybernetics, and must establish the bases to establish Strategic Alliances, the course and the way to combat these threats to protect the interests of the Countries of the Hemisphere.
