Inter-American Defense Board participates in Meeting of Experts on Maritime Drug Trafficking and Maritime Security

Last week (September 11-13), the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) participated in the meeting promoted by the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

The event brought together local authorities and representatives from different countries and institutions, such as Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Barbados, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, United States, France, Italy, Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre (MAOC), Regional Security System (RSS) and SEACOP.

The meeting was chaired by the Commander of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard, Captain of Sea and War Don Polo, together with the Head of the OAS/CICAD, Mr. Rafael Parada. The main objective of the event was to exchange experiences and suggestions to make the fight against maritime drug trafficking more effective.

The Inter-American Defense Board (IADB), represented by Captain Rodrigo Francesconi, had the opportunity to present the projects developed by the Hemispheric Cooperation Division of the IADB, such as the preparation of the Good Practice Guide and the application Safe Sea During the presentation, the invitation was reinforced to all countries present to actively participate in these programs, promoting greater integration in the fight against maritime trafficking.

Finally, on the last day of the meeting, the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard presented its approach to the threat of drug trafficking and the means used both in the Safeguarding of Human Life at Sea, and in the Defense and control of its jurisdictional waters.
