The Inter-American Defense Board, represented by the President of the Council of Delegates, Vice Admiral Alexandre Rabello de Faria and by the Director of the Inter-American Defense College, Major General James E. Taylor, participated as an observer in the South American Defense Conference (SOUTHDEC) held in Quito, Ecuador, from September 14 to 15, 2022.
SOUTHDEC is an executive-level forum between the Chiefs of Defense Staff (Chiefs of Defense) of South America, co-sponsored by the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) and the co-host country, for the purpose of discussing security and defense issues of the region.
In this year's edition, based in Ecuador, the topic discussed was "Defeating Global and Cross-Border Threats through Regional Collaboration." The conference provided a forum for executive-level discussions on “Gray Zone Warfare: Combat in Cyberspace, Space and Information”; and "Environmental Security and the Role of the Defense Forces."
This conference was attended by the defense chiefs or representatives of the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Uruguay. Also in attendance were the Southern Command and the National Guard Bureau (NGB), representatives of the United States of America and observers.
