Participation of the Director General of the IADB Secretariat in a Regional Consultation on Climate and Security in the Caribbean

On December 13, 2018, Brigadier General Lacroix participated in a regional consultation meeting held in Aruba. The “Climate and Security in the Caribbean Region: A Roadmap to Resilience” Conference brought together technical experts, practitioners and policymakers in the fields of climate change, disaster risk management and regional security. The Conference addressed climate change and the effect on human security in the Caribbean region.
Some of the high-level speakers at the event included the Hon. Evelyn Wever-Croes, Prime Minister of Aruba, Ambassador Jules Bijl, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Hon. Vaden Williams, MP, Chairman of the Council of the Caribbean Agency of the Disaster Emergency Management (CDEMA), Mr. Ronald Jackson, Executive Director, CDEMA, Mr. Martin Ras, Policy Analyst, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) New York, Dr. Louise van Shaik, Planetary Security Initiative (PSI), and Michael Jones, Caribbean Community and Common Market – Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS).
An agreement was reached to promote Coordination among Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the following areas:
* Strengthen capacity and knowledge on climate and security in the context of Caribbean SIDS.
* Strengthen regional coordination in support of humanitarian crises.
* Promote food security in the context of a changing climate.
* Advance water security in the context of a changing climate.
* Advance the renewable energy transition of Caribbean SIDS in the context of a changing climate.
* Advocate for greater political support for the Regional Climate and Security Agenda.
The results of the consultation will take shape in a Regional Action Plan to foster climate resilience in the region. It will also be included in next year's Planetary Security Conference, which will be held in The Hague on 19-20 February 2019, and will focus on several prominent regions, including the Caribbean.
