On April 2, 2025, the Extraordinary Meeting 002/2025 of the IADB Council of Delegates took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This event was of great significance to the history of hemispheric security and cooperation. It was attended by Her Excellency Ambassador Jacinth Henry Martin, Chair of the OAS Committee on Hemispheric Security and Permanent Representative of St. Kitts and Nevis to the OAS, along with the IADB Leadership and delegates accredited to the OAS.
This event commemorated the 83rd anniversary of the Third Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Republics of the Americas, held in 1942 in the same city, where, in view of the advance of the Second World War and the threat it represented for the continent, the creation of the IADB was approved.
Tribute was also paid to the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Berlin, a pivotal engagement that heralded the end of World War II. This conflict redefined the international order and reinforced the need for cooperative mechanisms in the hemisphere to ensure peace and stability.
As part of the commemoration, the IADB Medal was awarded to organizations, institutions, and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to strengthening security, cooperation, and defense in the hemisphere, recognizing their commitment to the principles that inspired the creation of the IADB.
Throughout the event, the importance of regional, subregional, and multilateral cooperation was reaffirmed, highlighting the continued existence of the spirit of unity that drove the creation of the IADB in 1942. It was emphasized that, in a constantly evolving world, the integration of knowledge, technical advice, and security education remain fundamental tools for addressing the common challenges that threaten the stability of the hemisphere.
On this anniversary, the IADB not only looks back on its history but also projects its vision toward the future, reaffirming its commitment to peace, security, and stability in the Americas, in line with the values enshrined in the Declaration of Security of the Americas.
