Last Thursday, December 7, the Disaster Cooperation Division (DCD) of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) participated in the regular meeting organized by the Hemispheric Security Commission at the headquarters of the Organization of American States, in Washington DC .
In compliance with the provisions of paragraphs 46, corresponding to resolution AG/RES. 3009 (LIII-O/23), and in paragraphs 53 and 86 (letters a and b) of resolution AG/RES. 2986 (LII-O/22), Colonel Fábio Rodrigo de Assis, of the Brazilian Army, presented the humanitarian assistance activities carried out by the Disaster Cooperation Division of the Inter-American Defense Board in 2023, their lessons learned, planning future activities and dialogue between the different IADB contact points on this topic.
The regular meeting of the Permanent Council was chaired by Ambassador Gustavo Lino Adrianzén Olaya, President of the OAS Hemispheric Security Commission. Representing the Director General of the IADB, Colonel Matthew Heim (USA), Director of the Undersecretary of Services and Advisory, and the Head of the Executive Liaison Office of the IADB with the OAS, Colonel Claudio Alcázar ( Chili).
The Organization of American States is the main regional forum for dialogue, policy analysis and decision-making on issues of the Hemisphere. The OAS brings together leaders from the nations of the Americas to address issues and opportunities in the region. Together, they seek to promote cooperation between States and advance a common regional agenda in terms of democratic governance, human rights, multidimensional security and sustainable development.
On March 15, 2006, as the Inter-American Defense Board turned 64 years old, it was definitively established by resolution 1 (XXXII-E/06) of the General Assembly that the IADB is an entity of the OAS based on art. . 53 of the Charter of said Organization and approves in the first plenary session the statutes that will govern the new entity.
Thus, the purpose of the IADB is to “Provide the OAS and its Member States with technical, consultative and educational advisory services on issues related to military and defense affairs in the Hemisphere to contribute to compliance with the Charter of the OAS.
It is important to highlight that the Inter-American Defense Board develops activities that contribute to strengthening the management and response capabilities of the member states to current and future challenges on issues related to military and defense matters and opportunities in environments related to Environmental Protection.
