JID receives visit from the Minister of Defense of Peru

On August 8, the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) received the visit of the Minister of Defense of Peru, Brigadier General Jorge Luis Chávez Cresta, accompanied by the Chief of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, Army General Manuel Gómez de La Torre Araníbar, and the General Commander of the Peruvian Air Force, Air General Alfonso Artadi Saletti.

On the occasion, visitors heard a presentation on the structure and main activities currently carried out within the Inter-American Defense Board, in the most varied aspects, in support of the defense and security actions of the countries of the hemisphere, such as disaster cooperation, cybersecurity, humanitarian demining, environmental protection and the fight against transnational crimes.

The meeting represented an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties between the members of the IADB and the representatives of the Republic of Peru, an important South American country that holds the status of founding member of the Inter-American Defense Board and the Organization of American States ( OAS).

Bathed by the Pacific Ocean and with about 33 million inhabitants, Peru is located in western South America, its relief is characterized by the desert plains on the coast, by the Andes Mountains, which cross the central region. of the country from north to south, and crossing the Amazon plain.

Strategically located, the country is home to the source of the Amazon River and part of the Amazon Rainforest, a region with the greatest biodiversity heritage on the planet. Also in Peru is the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu, declared by UNESCO as Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity.

At the Casa del Soldado, the visitors were received by Brigadier General Marco Antonio Álvarez Reyes (Mexico), President of the Council of Delegates of the IADB, Brigadier Flávio Luiz de Oliveira Pinto (Brazil), Director General of the Secretariat; and Brigadier General Néstor Zalazar Echauri (Paraguay), Vice President of the Council of Delegates, accompanied at the time by Colonel Matthew Heim (USA), Director of the Undersecretary of Services and Advisory. Among other civil and military authorities, the Peruvian delegation included Division General Carlos Orlando Ríos Aguilar, Head of the Peruvian Delegation to the Inter-American Defense Board; and Minister Augusto Cabrera Rebaza, General Director of International Relations of the Ministry of Defense of Peru.
