Last Tuesday, October 17, the Disaster Cooperation Division (DCD) of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) and the Department of Sustainable Development (DDS) of the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI) of the Organization of American States (OAS) held a working meeting, which took place at the OAS facilities.
On the occasion, topics related to the activity programs of the respective Institutions, established for the current period, were discussed, with the purpose of improving the work carried out in tasks that contribute to strengthening the management capacities of the Member States, on related topics. with disaster prevention and response, in accordance with resolution No. 3,009 (LIII-0/23), of the OAS mandate (Promotion of hemispheric security: a multidimensional approach).
The Department of Sustainable Development (DDS) supports OAS Member States in the formulation and implementation of policies, programs and projects designed to integrate environmental priorities with the goals of poverty reduction and socioeconomic development, translating development goals sustainable and environmental protection in concrete actions that have an impact at the national level.
The meeting was chaired by the Director of the Department of Sustainable Development, Mark Lambrides, and the Head of the Disaster Cooperation Division, Colonel Orlando Ugaz, accompanied by the main officer on Climate Change issues of the DDS, Rubén Contreras Lisperguer, and the DDS main disaster officer, Charlene Solozano, as well as the members of the DCD. This meeting was organized by the Head of the Executive Liaison Office of the IADB with the OAS, Colonel Claudio Alcázar.
During the activity, the Head of the DCD, Colonel Orlando Ugaz of the Peruvian Army, presented the Disaster Cooperation Mechanism – MECODE, designed by the Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas (CMDA) and the General Secretariat of the IADB, with the support of the Organization of American States. MECODE is based on the exchange of updated, reliable and timely information between member countries and regional and subregional civil-military cooperation systems.
