On March 9, the Joint Meeting of the CSH and the IADB on Women, Peace and Security was held in the Hall of the Americas of the Organization of American States, with the theme “the influence of women in the development of security and defense institutions: challenges and good practices”, where six experienced international panelists shared their knowledge, lessons and experiences on this important topic.
The Director General of the IADB Secretariat in his opening message mentioned that more than 100 years after the first movements organized by the women To demand their participation in society and their full development as people equal to men, many rights have been institutionalized for women, but more are needed to close the gap and eliminate the barriers that still exist.
The Inter-American Defense Board, in conjunction with the Hemispheric Security Commission, joins the commitments of the UN and the OAS, to promote the full inclusion of women in all fields of human activity and at all levels of decision-making, with the conviction that security and defense as concepts and as strategic functions of States, will continue to evolve with the political-strategic thinking of each country and will be strengthened with the influence of women for adequate organizational development of security and defense institutions, traditionally dominated by men. .
The IADB took note of the contributions made to adopt actions to strengthen its Women, Peace and Security program, to propose to the OAS, innovative and inspiring ways to help member states include women in all development processes. peace and security from the area of conflict prevention and resolution and through the Inter-American Defense College, the main academic body of the Board, the training of Military Officers, National Police and Civil Officials of the Governments of the Americas will continue to be promoted. to develop future national leaders with a hemispheric perspective to hold high-level strategic positions.
In addition to the presentations, prominent ladies from the diplomatic and academic fields, representatives of international organizations and female military leaders from 10 Ibero-American nations, made interventions through which they shared their experiences and reinforced knowledge on the subject.
The event was open to the entire public, through the Kudo Platform and the IADB YouTube Channel, with 1,879 virtual participants from 26 countries in the hemisphere and 6 from Europe.
