Last Tuesday, October 10, the Inter-American Defense Board received the traditional annual academic visit of the Inter-American Defense College (CID), this year made up of students from the 63rd class of the master's degree in defense sciences and hemispheric security.
Led by Major General Richard J. Heitkamp (USA), Director of the CID; by Brigadier General Carlos Eduardo Barbosa da Costa (Brazil), Deputy Director of the CID; and by Group General Abel Martínez García (Mexico), Head of Studies of the College, the delegation was made up of 62 students from 18 countries on the continent, the 54% of the class being made up of military personnel, the 19% of police officers and the 27% of other civil and diplomatic officials.
Among the activities planned on the agenda, students had the opportunity to learn about the activities carried out within the Board in favor of strengthening trust and security in the American hemisphere, through a presentation on the structure , organization, operation, missions and main challenges that the institution faces in the current global scenario.
Founded in 1962, the Inter-American Defense College is the academic entity of the IADB, an entity that operates independently of the Organization of American States (OAS). The CID is hosted by the United States Government at Fort Lesley J. McNair, in Washington DC
The CID trains senior leaders of OAS member countries representing the armed forces, police, diplomatic corps and other government agencies with functions in hemispheric defense and security, and is accredited to offer a master's degree in science and a diploma in Defense and Inter-American Security.
In the historic facilities of the Casa del Soldado, the visitors were received by Brigadier General Marco Antonio Álvarez Reyes (Mexico), President of the Council of Delegates of the IADB; by Brigadier Flávio Luiz de Oliveira Pinto (Brazil), Director General of the Secretariat; and by Brigadier General Néstor Zalazar Echauri (Paraguay), Vice President of the Council of Delegates.
