Between September 26 and 27, 2023, the Inter-American Defense Board participated as an Observer Member in the VIII Inter-American Naval Specialized Interoperability Conference, organized by the Sea Fleet Command of the Argentine Navy at the Puerto Belgrano Naval Base, Argentina .
The objective of the conference was to analyze proposals and recommendations to develop interoperability in doctrinal aspects, command and control systems, technological standardization, planning and execution of combined exercises, contributing to improving capabilities in the face of the challenges of the 21st century. 12 countries from the Americas participated in the conference.
Topics addressed during the conference included humanitarian assistance and response to natural disasters, interoperability in cyber defense, procedures and uses of unmanned vehicles. The topics were presented by the Navies of Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Chile, Canada, the United States and by the IADB.
At the conference, the IADB outlined crucial initiatives for regional maritime security. Focusing on the prevention of maritime crimes and emergency response, it highlighted a Guide to Good Practices in Maritime Security as a regional reference and presented its “Safe Seas” application, for visualization of crimes at sea. Among other important aspects, he also highlighted the importance of cooperation between navies for coordinated responses to disasters, detailing the MECODE (Cooperation Mechanism in Case of Disaster). During the event, another important IADB initiative, the Cyber Defense Program, was also discussed, highlighting the importance of collaboration between navies to strengthen maritime security.
The IADB reiterated its commitment to contributing to maritime security in the region, presenting concrete programs and products to strengthen cooperation between navies. At the end of the Conference, proposed recommendations were presented, highlighting support for the development of the IADB Maritime Security Program and the MECODE Project, both approved by the member Navies.
The CNI was created in 1959 with the objective of promoting the exchange of ideas, knowledge and mutual understanding of the maritime problems that affect the continent, stimulating permanent professional contacts between the Navies of the participating countries and promoting hemispheric solidarity.
The next Inter-American Naval Specialized Conference on Interoperability is scheduled for 2025 in the United States of America.
